In “A Burial for Flowers”, Henry Smith must fight to understand a bloody history during China’s “Three Bitter Years” (1958-61) to uncover his father’s mysterious death. The story takes place in two settings the first is in early 1960s Henan Province, China during the Great Leap Forward when an estimated 30 to 60 million Chinese died of famine; the second is in a western city in the near future when a biomedical technology company has begun a project known as the “Process” which is rumored to extend life infinitely. The story begins as Henry has just inherited his father's conglomerate business. Events surrounding his father’s death lead Henry to believe foul play had been involved. As Henry sets out to uncover the details, he realizes he is intricately connected to the Process and, mysteriously, to the lost history of 1960s Henan. As Henry learns about how these seemingly unconnected time periods relate to one another, he is faced with a decision about his father’s final project and must put himself at peace with his father’s passing.

What an incredible novel. Not only is this book FULL of very rich writing via incredible detail, vivid descriptions, wonderful character development, the exploration of many everyday concepts in fresh, exciting, and thought provoking ways, but it also offers a gripping plot while also exploring some of China's suppressed history during the 1960s during the Great Leap Forward. The author offers the reader much reflection through her fresh, sometimes-philosophical perspective, while also offering a historical perspective of China that was based off of a lot of research and personal interviews. Furthermore, the plot takes the reader through a science fiction adventure that ends up tying together all of the diverse characters, the history and the philosophical themes. I HIGHLY recommend this book if you are looking for something descriptive, exciting, thought provoking, with a little history thrown in the mix - or any of the above. I cannot wait to read Fan's next novel! The novel starts out with Henry, the son of a high-powered CEO of a biomedical tech company, being groomed to take over the company in light of his father's ailing health. He soon discovers that his father was working on a project that was rumored to reverse the aging process and allow humans to live forever. As Henry's story is developed, the story of Wei An Jing in 1960s Henan Province, China during a terrible famine ("The Three Bitter Years" is also unraveled. Through many plots twists, Henry eventually visits China and can finally make sense of his father's project, while also coming to a better understanding and acceptance of life.

A Burial for Flowers A Novel eBook Pan Pan Fan Yao Cheng Reviews
I LOVE the characters and the book's many surprises. Highly recommended!
A thoughtful, interesting and engaging novel that gives the reader a real sense of what life was like in China during the Great Leap Forward and other periods, as well as an understanding of how mythology and lore play a part in the culture. Beautifully written!
This is a wonderful novel. I enjoy reading it and will recommend others read it too. Thank you Pan Pan for providing readers a great novel,
This novel was fantastically written - the story will absorb you. It is written from the perspective of many characters whose lives eventually connect. The book is dark, philosophical, enlightening and fascinating.
A very captivating read that encompasses history, mystery, and a little bit of romance. It often pushed my ideas about reality to the brink, regarding both the mystical and scientific worlds. Anxiously awaiting her next novel!
A Burial for Flowers isn't an easy read, and it's not intended to be one. Instead, it's a flowing, twisting, and thoughtful journey winding between the realms of science fiction, historical, and mythological. More than anything else, it's a beautiful study of imperfect characters living in an imperfect world. It can seem confusing at times or hard to keep track of, but at the end of the day that's kind of the point, as plot lines work themselves closer and closer intertwined only to fall back into interpretation at the end. If you're struggling to get through the many characters and timelines at the start, know that things will come together and make more sense before the book is done. Just don't expect the book to give anything for free - you need to take the journey through the past along with the protagonists.
